Pakistan Mango Export Season – From Sindhri to Chaunsa

Pakistan is globally known for producing some of the finest mangoes in the world. Every year, importers across Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia, the UK, and North America wait eagerly for the arrival of fresh Pakistani mangoes. The export season usually begins around late May or early June, depending on crop maturity and weather conditions. In recent years, authorities have focused more on fruit maturity, quality control, and cold-chain compliance to protect Pakistan’s reputation in international markets.

The mango season starts from Sindh province with the famous Sindhri variety. Sindhri is considered one of Pakistan’s earliest export mangoes, known for its large size, golden color, sweetness, and smooth texture. As the season progresses, mango supply gradually shifts toward Punjab, where premium varieties such as White Chaunsa, Black Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol, and Langra dominate the market during July and August.

The Procurement Process

The export process begins with procurement of mangoes either from wholesale fruit markets such as Karachi Mandi or directly from orchards in Sindh and Punjab. However, in Pakistan, most commercial mango orchards are usually leased out months before the season begins. Exporters, contractors, and traders secure orchards early to ensure consistent supply and better quality fruit during peak export season.

Large exporters often prefer direct orchard procurement because it provides better control over harvesting, grading, and fruit maturity. Mangoes intended for export are harvested carefully to avoid sap burn and bruising, as international buyers demand premium quality fruit with longer shelf life.

Sorting, Grading & Packing

After procurement, mangoes are transported to processing and packing facilities. Here, the fruit goes through multiple stages including:

  • Washing and cleaning
  • Sorting by size and quality
  • Removal of damaged fruit
  • Export-grade packing

Different markets have different quality requirements. Middle Eastern markets usually prefer larger, visually attractive mangoes, while European buyers focus heavily on phytosanitary compliance, ripeness control, and shelf life.

Hot Water Treatment (HWT) for Europe

For European and several high-end international markets, Pakistani mangoes must undergo Hot Water Treatment (HWT). This process is essential to meet international phytosanitary standards and reduce the risk of fruit flies and post-harvest diseases.

During HWT, mangoes are immersed in temperature-controlled hot water for a specific duration depending on fruit size and variety. This treatment helps exporters comply with international SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) requirements and improves acceptance in European markets.

After treatment, mangoes are moved into cold storage facilities for cooling and temperature stabilization. Proper cooling is one of the most critical steps in maintaining fruit freshness during export transit.

Cold Chain & Export Logistics

Once packing and cooling are completed, exporters dispatch mangoes through two primary logistics channels:

Sea Freight – Reefer Containers

For Middle Eastern and nearby markets, mangoes are commonly shipped in refrigerated (reefer) containers. Maintaining a continuous cold chain is extremely important to preserve fruit quality, sweetness, and shelf life during transportation. Pakistani authorities and exporters have increasingly emphasized the use of reefer logistics for export quality assurance.

Air Shipments – Premium Export Markets

For Europe, Scandinavia, and urgent premium orders, exporters rely heavily on air cargo. Air shipments are faster and help deliver fresher fruit with better shelf presentation. However, cargo space during mango season becomes limited, which is why exporters usually pre-book air shipments well in advance before the season starts.

Without advance booking, exporters may face delays, higher freight rates, or shortage of cargo space during peak weeks of the mango season.

Pakistan’s Leading Export Varieties

Some of the most popular Pakistani mango varieties in international markets include:

  • Sindhri
  • White Chaunsa
  • Black Chaunsa
  • Anwar Ratol
  • Langra
  • Samar Bahisht

Among these, Sindhri dominates the early export window, while Chaunsa varieties are considered the premium late-season mangoes with exceptional aroma and sweetness.

Growing International Demand

Pakistani mangoes continue to gain popularity worldwide because of their unique flavor, aroma, and natural sweetness. Export demand remains especially strong in:

  • UAE
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Kingdom
  • Sweden
  • Germany
  • Norway
  • Canada

International buyers are increasingly looking for reliable exporters who can maintain quality standards, proper cold-chain handling, and timely delivery.
